Passover Overview

Passover (Pesach) commemorates the Exodus from Egypt and is celebrated for seven days in Israel and eight days outside of Israel. The first night of the holiday includes a festive meal known as the Seder, and a second Seder is observed on night two in the diaspora.

How Many Seders?

  • In Israel: One Seder is held on the first night.
  • Outside Israel: Two Seders are held—one on each of the first two nights.

The Seder is the heart of the holiday—retelling the story of the Exodus with symbolic foods, songs, and traditions.

What Else to Know

Chol Hamoed (the intermediate days) begins after the Seders and continues until the final day(s) of Yom Tov. The number of Chol Hamoed days depends on your location:

  • In Israel, where there is only one Yom Tov at the start and end of Passover, there are five full days of Chol Hamoed.
  • In the diaspora, there are two days of Yom Tov at both ends, so Chol Hamoed lasts four days.

This difference can affect holiday plans, especially for those joining Passover programs or planning day trips.

Mimouna, a joyful post-Passover celebration with roots in North African Jewish tradition, is held on the evening after the holiday ends—on night 7 in Israel and night 8 in the diaspora.

Why Planning Ahead Matters

Whether you’re heading to a Passover program, planning a family gathering, or booking a vacation rental with kosher catering, having the dates in mind early helps avoid stress and last minute prep.
